I just purchased the D5100 and couldn’t be happier. I’m a casual family photographer moving from an Olympus C5060 which as far as point and shoots go is quite sophisticated (has full manual settings on A, S, and ISO), but I wasn’t sure if I wanted the D7000 or the D5100. In the end I decided I really wasn’t anything more than a person taking pictures of my kids, so I went with the D5100. What a great decision! The D5100 offers crisp focus, amazing low light performance, and almost no shutter lag; I can’t believe how much I was missing with my old camera! I also purchased the 55-200mm VR lens and this has given me 6X magnification, 3 times better than my old camera and perfect for kids sporting events. The VR function is really quite impressive; I have seen no blurriness, even in low light. I also like that in Auto mode it recognizes what type of picture you are taking (portrait, landscape, etc…) and uses the appropriate settings. I really wanted a camera that does well in low light, has a high continuous release mode, a good battery and autofocus during video. The D5100 does all this wonderfully and at a considerable cost savings vs. the D7000 or any other camera for that matter (Canon 60D, Sony A55, etc…) with comparable performance. I would highly recommend this camera to anyone; Nikon has really hit a home run with this new model.

I am an avid amateur photographer, graduating from old film Nikons, to digital to the 5100. I love the fact that some of my older AF lenses still work with the 5100. I just got this delivered on 3/27 so I have just had a weekend with it, but so far it has been excellent. It has the typical Nikon lens quality, with the added features of the 5100. I considered the 3100 and the 7100. I felt the 3100 was more of an "entry level" camera and could not justify the 7100 with my needs, an everyday camera that has video capabilities. The image quality is sharp and clear, Image capture is fast and shooting sports and moving objects should be easy.
The size is noticeably smaller than my D70 and weight is definitely lighter.
The LCD display is sharp and bright and the ability to swivel and move is useful.
This is worth the price!
